On a magazine newsstand the magazines are purposely
positioned in a certain way to highlight its main selling points to the
audience, they are positioned/designed in the style of ‘imaginary three
pieces’ all the main points of the magazine are designed to be placed on
the left third of the magazine whereas this is the first sight the audience
see. The masthead is placed at the top in bold, shown to be the first
visual branding of the title in the ‘imaginary three piece’ and is often
done in a specially designed typeface to be very recognisable and unique
towards the audience. The main image is also visible in the left third
design which the image is shown to include the person of interest,
stereotypically the image portrays its importants as it is presented in
front of the title as audiences are commonly interested in image. The main
cover line is on the left to present the main story of the magazine visible
to audience view. The freebee is presented on the left as well showing the audience
they are getting more than what they bargained for, saving money in the
process.

Secondly another way of distributing
magazines is subscription only magazines. This form of distribution makes a
good profit on regular basis. Subscription magazine you are to pay a
monthly fee to receive the magazine post weekly, which helps you to keep up
with the latest gossip to date. A disadvantage of subscription magazines
isn’t advertised anywhere as they aren’t the magazines that are sold in
regular shops/stores. The subscription magazine would need some form of
advertising/promoting otherwise the public won’t have any way of knowing
anything about it, which makes the companies lose money as a result. And now
if someone’s only wanted one magazine not a monthly subscription of them,
the magazine company would lose money because they don’t sell individual
magazines, so they would have to be able to target subscription magazine to
specific target audiences. |
Online magazines are now the biggest
method (e.g. E-Zine-Turn pages/electronic versions) of distribution linked
to and promoted on websites to distribute magazines however for the company
to afford its own website it needs to have a high success rate to start off
with. This way of distributing magazines as you don’t only get the
advertisement from the shops you also can get it from online. Some
individuals find internet access quick, easy and reliable so they are most
likely to look at the magazine they are most interested in online. However
not everyone has access to the internet and even a computer in other terms,
therefore not everyone will have access to the magazines. Another
disadvantage would be if the company was to go completely bust, they would
lose the internet publicity, whereas our world is becoming more technically
based many people would stop buying the magazines. |
Distribution of magazines can be advertising/promoting
it such as direct distribution – directly in consumer’s hand in stores
paying upfront which can be a positive output as people can look through
the magazines before actually purchasing it, checking if what’s in the
magazine fits the persons criteria of interest. A disadvantage can be
individuals just coming to look through the magazines while in the store
and not buying any, which makes the company of the magazine and store lose
money, which gives them no choice on to placing a sign on the magazine
shelf in sighting the audience with the messages; don’t read the magazines
while in store, either pay and read or watch and leave. Advertising/
promoting of distribution of magazines can be Apps on smart phones on
purchasing magazines, postal subscription benefiting publishers which then
guarantees sale. This is an advantage also to audience as they get the
magazine for cheaper than getting it from the store and also the Apps
provides the magazine with free gifts for the phone. A disadvantage can be
downloading these apps can make your phone go slower in speed and freeze your
phone because of the slow connection through the internet usage. |
